The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas dipped to 6.4 per cent in the July-September quarter, according to the National Sample Survey Survey (NSSO). Joblessness, or unemployment rate, is defined as the percentage of unemployed people in the labour force. The unemployment rate in the September quarter of FY24 was 6.6 per cent. The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in the previous April-June quarter of FY25 was 6.6 per cent in urban areas, the 24th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) showed. The unemployment rate among females (aged 15 years and above) in urban areas declined to 8.4 per cent in July-September 2024 from 8.6 per cent in the same quarter a year ago. About a third of China's urban population is estimated to be at risk due to land subsidence, shows a new finding which researchers said is indicative of a global phenomenon. China's urban area below the sea level could triple by 2120, potentially affecting 55 to 128 million residents, it found. Using satellite data, the research team studied 82 cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, with a collective population of nearly 700 million people. The team, including researchers from the University of East Anglia, UK, found that 45 per cent of the urban land area analysed was sinking, with 16 per cent sinking at the rate of 10 millimetres a year. Hotspots included Beijing and the coastal city of Tianjin, they said. The study estimated that 270 million urban residents could be affected, with nearly 70 million experiencing rapid subsidence of 10 millimetres a year or more. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has ordered the termination of two non-official members of DUSIB who were serving as expert members without any requisite qualification in urban planning, Raj Niwas officials said on Thursday. Saxena issued the directions in the exercise of his powers under section 4(2) of the DUSIB Act, 2010, they added. However, the Delhi government later issued a statement saying the appointment of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) members lies in the domain of the elected government and not the LG. Raj Niwas officials earlier said that of the two officers whose services were ordered to be terminated, one has been serving as an expert member of DUSIB for nine years while the other was appointed as a non-official member on March 9, 2022. Both were drawing hefty remunerations in contravention of the law, they added. Saxena also sought a panel of fresh names for expert members who fulfil the requisite qualifications within a week, an official said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has approved a proposal to increase the number of workdays from 100 to 125 under the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme. A state government statement said that the scheme, started on the lines of central government's Mahatma Gandhi NREGA, is proving helpful for the jobless in the cities. This amendment will be effective from April 1, 2023. An expenditure of about Rs 1,100 crore is likely to be incurred for providing additional 25 days' work to the urban unemployed, the statement said. Gehlot had made the announcement in the budget 2023-24. The scheme was implemented in the year 2022-23. Last year, a budget of Rs 800 crore was allocated to provide 100 days of employment per family under the scheme. Under the scheme, people can get work through a job card, which they can issued by producing Jan Aadhaar card and fulfilling other formalities.
