A consumer commision here has directed private carrier SpiceJet Limited to refund a senior citizen couple the amount they had paid for a flight cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The commission held that the airline was guilty of deficiency in service by not refunding the ticket cost after the flight cancellation and despite clear guidelines from the Supreme Court and aviation regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation).
The district consumer disputes redressal commission (Mumbai suburban) passed the order last month and its details were available recently.
As per the order, the complainants, residents of suburban Chembur, had booked two tickets on June 24, 2020, from Mumbai to Pondicherry via Bangalore for a scheduled flight on July 1 and paid Rs 13,696 through a credit card for both tickets.

The Uttar Pradesh government will soon organise the groundbreaking ceremony of investment proposals worth Rs 10 lakh crore, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Wednesday.
Inviting the semiconductor industry to invest in the state, the chief minister highlighted that Uttar Pradesh offers incentives such as land subsidies and capital subsidies of 25 per cent for chip units under a policy.
Together with the Centre's incentives of 50 per cent, chip units can get subsidies of up to 75 per cent for investment proposals, the chief minister stated.
Addressing the international conference on semiconductors, Semicon India, Adityanath said that the state under his government has attracted huge investment proposals from the industry.
He recalled that a team which was preparing for an investor summit in the state earlier told him that investment proposals worth Rs 20,000 crore would come in UP.

The Patna High Court on Wednesday commuted the death sentences of four persons convicted for the 2013 serial blasts in Patna that targeted the inaugural rally of Narendra Modi, who was then the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, in Bihar.
A division bench comprising Justices Ashutosh Kumar and Jitendra Kumar disposed of the Death Reference moved by state government on the order of a special NIA court, and ruled that the four convicts shall serve "30 years in prison".
In October 2021, the trial court convicted nine persons in total, sentencing two to life imprisonment, two others to 10 years in jail each, and one to seven years in prison, while acquitting one of the accused.
In a 63-page order, the High Court said for Imtiyaz Alam, Haider Ali, Numan Ansari, and Mujibullah Ansari, a 30-year prison sentence "would suffice and would meet the ends of justice." Incidentally, Alam, Ali and Mujibullah Ansari are also serving life sentence in Bodh Gaya serial blasts of July, 2013.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday met Home Minister Amit Shah and submitted a preliminary report on the extent of damage caused to agricultural crops due to floods and heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
