Teachers’ Day is celebrated in India on September 5, the birthday of the former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a well-known scholar, philosopher and teacher. Every year, Teachers' Day is marked to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. On this day, students celebrate the contribution of teachers in their lives and in shaping up society. The classrooms across the nation burst into colours with cultural programmes and greetings.
On Teachers' Day, the National Teachers’ Awards are given to the meritorious teachers by the President of India. The awards are conferred as a public gratitude to praiseworthy teachers working in the primary schools, middle schools and secondary schools.
Teachers' Day History
The first Teachers' Day was celebrated in India in 1962. Some of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's students and friends approached him and requested to allow them to celebrate his birthday. However, he suggested, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if the day is observed as Teachers' day". From then on, every year, September 5 has been celebrated as Teachers Day, in India.
