Who is Dilip Kumar Paul?

Elected twice from the Silchar constituency in Assam, Dilip Kumar Paul is an Indian politician and was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) until 2021.

The 64-year-old leader hailed from a traditional business family in Silchar and completed his B.Com from Gauhati University in 1977.

In 1983, Paul joined the BJP as a primary member in the Cachar district. From 1997 to 2002, he was the BJP Ward President of Silchar. Later in 2012, the Assamese leader became the President of the BJP Town Mandal Committee.

Paul was elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2014 and in 2016 for the second time, defeating Congress leaders both times. He was the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, but in a letter to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, he asked to be relieved from the post.

The leader is associated with various organisations such as Bharat Vikash Parishad, Silchar Food Grains Merchant Association, Bharat Sevasharm Sangha, Barak Valley Voluntary Blood Donor Forum, etc.

Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Paul left the BJP as the party denied him the election ticket from the Silchar seat. The sitting MLA will now contest the poll as an independent candidate.
