Adani eyes 32% share in power sector by 2020

Adani Enterprises plans to have a combined power generation capacity of 18,500 MW by the year 2020, when it will account for 32% of overall power production in the country, a top company official said.

Adani Power is currently working on speedy completion of power plants at seven location across the country at Mundra (4,620 MW), Tiroda in Maharashtra (3,300 MW), Kawai in Rajasthan (1,320 MW), Dahej in Gujarat (2,640 MW), Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh (1,320 MW), Bhadreshwar in Gujarat (3,300 MW) and Chendipada in Orissa (2,000 MW), the Chief Operating Officer of Adani's power generation division, Dev Prakash Joshi, told reporters here.

In India, consumption of power per capita is a mere 612 kWh (Kilowatt per hour) compared to the global average of 14,240 kWh, he said, adding that the Adani Group has paid adequate compensation to farmers whose lands were acquired for setting up the projects.

Adani Enterprises recently acquired coal mines in Australia and Indonesia with collective reserves of 157.8 million tonne, Joshi said, adding that the company imported 29 million metric tonne of coal in the 2010 fiscal.

Besides power generation, the Adani Group is engaged in coal mining at Parsa-Kente in Chhattisgarh, Machchakata in Orissa, Parsa in Chhattisgarh and Chendipada in Orissa.
