The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) has set up its first regional office outside Delhi in Gujarat. The office at Ahmedabad will act as a headquarter for the western region, catering to neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa.

According to Akshay Sheth, regional director - Gujarat chapter, Assocham, Maharashtra will have its own regional office later on. "We are looking at setting up more such regional centres in other states. So far Assocham had been purely a national body but we now believe that for better representation of the industry, one has to go regional as well," he said.

The regional office of Assocham in Gujarat is a result of several requests from the local industry in the state, said Sheth. "There is a feeling that the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is not representing the local industry's proper perspective. Which is why, an Assocham regional office had to be set up," he said.

Talking about the roadmap for the new regional office, Sheth said that the industry body would focus on Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and special investment regions (SIRs) and Gujarat's importance in these areas.

"We will be holding several seminars and panel discussions in the coming days on these issues," Sheth added.
