Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Bhel)'s Corporate R&D division at Hyderabad has clocked a value of in-house developments at Rs 9,512 crore for the year 2011-12, which is 19 per cent of the company's total turnover and up 22 per cent over last year.

During the year, the company spent Rs 1,162 crore on R&D, an increase of 18 per cent over last year.

The R&D division got 34 Indian and 3 foreign patents to its various technology innovations, while it filed a total of 138 patent applications and two design and 202 copyright applications, a release said.

“Technology shift is envisaged in key business areas like advanced/ultra supercritical power technology, integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology, carbon capture initiatives, solar and wind energy, higher rating transmission systems including gas insulated and high-voltage,direct current (HVDC) systems, and advanced systems for traction applications.

This proposal will give BHEL a competitive edge over its contemporaries,” it stated.

To strengthen competency in product development and engineering, the company will focus on developing partnerships and alliances for creating external resources for specialised development work as well as apply knowledge management principles for transforming R&D potential in a systematic manner.
