Cairn India, the firm that gave the country its largest onland oil discovery in more than two decades, was today accorded the 'Superbrand' status.

The award was received by Manu Kapoor, Director, Corporate Communication, Affairs & CSR, Cairn India from Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia at a ceremony here today.

While the membership of this exclusive association/club of brands is by invitation only and comprises global giants from across categories like consumer, business and luxury, this accreditation puts Cairn India in the elite club of other oil and gas peers like Reliance, ONGC and technical company like L&T.

Cairn India on Tuesday reported a higher-than-expected growth in its June quarter net profit boosted by the rise in crude oil prices and an increase in output at its showpiece Rajasthan fields.

The April-June quarter consolidated net profit rose 10-fold to Rs 2,726.6 crore.

Besides Rajasthan, Cairn also produces oil and gas from two other blocks in India -- Ravva fields off the Andhra coast and CB-OS/2 in the Cambay Basin in Gujarat.

Superbrands as a concept started in the United Kingdom in 1993 and is a global powerhouse of an invitation only collective of the most impactful brands, which have made an impression in business and society over the decades.

Currently, Superbrand has grown into a multinational project operating in 86 countries across the Americas, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia.

In India, the collective was launched in 2003 and involves a rigorous selection process with nominations divided into two categories – Consumer (B2C) and Business (B2B brands). The rigorous selection process is a three tier evaluation.

Superbrands are always selected, never applied for.
