Cassidian, the erstwhile EADS defence and security, today announced the opening of its new engineering centre in the city. This is the first defence-oriented engineering centre operated by a foreign company in India, according to Cassidian.

The centre would be involved in engineering and system development, developing its core competencies in radar systems, protection systems, avionic systems, engineering IT and 3D visual simulation, aerostructure and aerospace modelling and simulation. During the inauguration ceremony, Stefan Zoller, CEO of Cassidian, said the centre was a “perfect example” of the company’s commitment to increase its industrial footprint in the country.

“The new centre is staffed almost entirely with Indian engineers who have undergone extensive training in Europe. It has planned to increase the present number of 60 employees to over 200 by the end of 2012,” he told reporters. The major objective of the centre is to leverage the vast pool of skilled engineers available in India to develop products fulfilling the specific requirements of Indian customers and to provide consultancy and other services to the aerospace and defence companies in India, Cassidian said.

“This will be accomplished by capitalising on leading edge technologies, systems and products of Cassidian. By integrating the new centre within Cassidian’s global Engineering Organisation, it will be enabled to participate in Indian as well as global programmes,” it said.

Cassidian said, it will work like a local company and will not be rebuilding, but bring in technology and sell the products globally, including in West Asia and Brazil, built locally.
