Contrary to the General Motors India’s expectations of starting work at its beleaguered Halol plant from today, the deadlock over wage revision seems far from over. The agitating workers abstained from work on the fourth consecutive day with negotiations failing to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
The company officials, however, are trying to resolve the issue. When contacted, GM India Director and Vice-President P Balendran informed, “The workers have not resumed work from today morning as the company was expecting. However, the negotiations are still on and we hope to arrive at a solution soon.”
Negotiations at the plant are on in presence of state labour department officials.
The government officials had visited the Halol plant on Saturday and had held meetings with both the management and the agitating workers.
The company had claimed the meeting was fruitful and it expected workers to resume work from Monday.
Production has come to a halt at the company’s Halol plant near Vadodara since Friday with nine hundred workers going on strike demanding higher wages. The company is losing production of 150 cars everyday.
