Some of the best-known defence companies operating in India, both foreign and domestic, have agreed to form an industry forum specifically aimed at promoting the interests in the country's strategic manufacturing space, as part of the larger "Make in India" programme.
As per a statement issued by what will be called the Association of Defence Companies in India, some leading companies are part of the alliance, including Boeing, Bell Helicopter, Punj Llyod, Augusta Westland, Lockheed Martin, Reliance Defence and Tatas.
Some of the others include, Rolls Royce, Saab, Northrop Gruman, Rolta, BAE Systems, Dassault, Honeywell, Thales, Finmeccanica, Hindustan Aerosystems and Merlinkhawk Aerospace.
During a meeting for this earlier this month, the representatives felt a forum such as this would serve as the most representative platform, with a unified voice, on policy matters pertaining to the government, armed Forces and state-run enterprises that affect their operations.
This apart, the forum could also promote collaborations, support improved understanding among the members, pursue India's strategic needs and deal appropriately with the interests of all the stakeholders.
It will also support design-led manufacturing, feed the defence eco system, foster business ties, influence debates on policy and increase membership value with complementary associations, which would provide market access worldwide.
