Responding to the increase in incidents of violence and fear of intimidation as a result of a growing anti-Chinese backlash, the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has sent a strong advisory to its members, asking them not to be “cowed down and succumb to unlawful acts by fringe elements”. The association represents virtually all leading mobile device manufacturers in the country.

The move comes on the heels of protests outside the gates of Chinese firm Oppo, which has a unit in Greater Noida, as well as the action of the Hindu Raksha Dal, which forcibly locked the gates of a Chinese mobile firm in UP. There have also been sporadic incidents of mob gathering in front of residences of senior executives, in retail stores, and even in the offices of some Chinese mobile firms companies. Senior executives have also been trolled on social media for considering themselves desi firms.
Xioami, the largest Chinese player in the country, has reportedly started covering their logo and signboards in their exclusive and multi-brand stores with a “Make in India” banner.

The association has suggested measures, invoking sections of the Indian Penal Code. It has advised firms to go in for civil action for damages, and, if needed, approach state chief ministers through the association. It has also given a detailed advisory on sensitising the retail store staff and points of purchase to the course of action. It has suggested that stores have CCTV installed at sensitive points.
