General Motors India (GM) is aiming to sell close to 250 units per month of its latest offering Chevrolet Sail U-VA in Gujarat. The car that was designed and built in India, was launched in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

"We have built the car including the engines here in India, and have kept in mind to include India-specific customisations in the vehicle as well", said P Balendran, vice president, corporate affairs of GM India.

"The car is more spacious than most of its competitors in the segment. The fuel tank is located centrally in order to maximise the interior space. The Flex Flat foding rear seat increases the space in the back to 1,134 litres", he explained.

He added that the company plans to sell around 250 units of the car in Gujarat initially. The B segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the automobile industry in the country. As Balendran puts it, "We are expecting sales of around 50,000 cars per month in the B segment. It is the largest and the fastest growing segment in the passenger vehicles industry in the country. It grew by 48 per cent last year."

GM has positioned the car in between the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai i20, the Sail U-VA has been priced attractively between Rs 4.4 lakh to Rs 6.62 lakh. "In order to boost customer confidence, we are also offering a five year warranty on the engine and transmission, which is a segment first", Balendran said.

GM plans to end the calendar year by selling over 100,000 vehicles overall.
