Haryana approves Rs 2,000 cr Suzuki motorcycle unit

The Haryana government today approved a Rs 2,000 crore unit of Suzuki Motorcycles that will come up at Rohtak.

The first phase of the project will entail an investment of Rs 500 crore and will be completed in 2014 with an annual capacity of 5-lakh units, officials said here.

The total cost of the 3-phase project is estimated to be Rs 2,000 crore, with a capacity of 2 million units by 2019, they said.

Besides Japan's Suzuki Motorcycle, which has a unit in Gurgaon, Hero Motocorp, Honda and Harley Davidson already have plants in the state making it the country's mobike hub.

Haryana approved Suzuki's proposal at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. It was also attended by state Industries Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala and Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki S Nakanishi and other officials.

Nakanishi told Hooda that the plant will commence production in 2014, HSIDC Managing Director Rajeev Arora said.

He added that the 50-acre unit will provide employment to 4,000 people and generate indirect employment opportunities for thousands more in the nearby region in terms of vendor manpower, logistics providers and service industries.

Arora said carmaker Maruti Suzuki has made investments of Rs 12,000 crore during the last seven years and investment of another Rs 6,000 crore was is in pipeline.
