Infosys goes green at its centres

As part of its assurance to the United Nations in 2008, Infosys said it would reduce its per capita consumption of power and water by 50% each

Infosys, the country's second-largest information technology services company is going green by 2018 for which it is putting all the efforts.The company has made a provision of $65 million for this and has spent Rs 20 crore so far. The initiatives include electricity, carbon emission, water management, renewable energy, waste management and biodiversity.

"We are committed to meeting our goal of sourcing 100 per cent of our electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2018. During fiscal year 2014, we met 30 per cent of our electricity needs about 75.6 million units of electricity through green power across India," said Ramdas Kamath, executive vice president, head of infrastructure, facilities, administration, security and sustainability at Infosys.

After its headquarters in Bangalore, Infosys has its second largest campus at Hinjewadi, Pune where total employee strength is 38,527 as on November 28, 2015. Spreaded over 115 acres, the campus has accommodation facility with 1,000 rooms, cricket ground, amphitheatre, volleyball court, basket ball court, tennis court, football ground, swimming pool, indoor games and gymnasiums.

Infosys has also become the first Indian company to join RE100, a global platform for major companies committed to 100 per cent renewable power. As part of its assurance to the United Nations in 2008, Infosys said it would reduce its per capita consumption of power and water by 50 per cent each. In fiscal year 2015, Infosys claims to have reduced its per capita electricity and water consumption by about 46 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, with renewable energy sources fulfilling 30 per cent of their electricity requirements.

Kamath added: "Although from 2008 to 2015, the numbers of employees have increased by 120 percent, the absolute increase in energy consumption has only been 13 per cent. Infosys also focuses on encouraging its employees to use public transport through a transport system based on the scientific operational research model."

According to Kamath, Infosys is looking for another 100-acre land in Pune for the expansion and waiting for government of Maharashtra's approval.

The company has plans to expand its base in the cities like Indor, Mohali, Belgum, Hubli and Nagpur. In Nagpur, Infosys is developing the campus which will accommodate over 4500 employees and it will be operational in the next 18 months. Other centres have a capacity of accommodating 5,000 seats.
