Intel unveils next generation of Atom processors for netbooks

Chip maker Intel today launched a new version of its 'Atom' processors, which will consume 20 per cent lesser power than its predecessor.

Atom processors, designed for netbooks and entry-level desktop PCs, were introduced by Intel in June 2008.

"Intel's Atom processor has fuelled an entirely new category of computing...We're excited to be delivering the next-generation Atom platform as we head into a second phase of growth, powering new system designs with better performance, smaller form factor and better battery life," Intel (Asia Pacific) Platform Product Marketing Manager David M McCloskey told reporters on a conference call.

Pricing and availability will be announced in January, he added.

The new generation of Atom platform, formerly codenamed 'Pine Trail', consists a new processor and a low-power Intel chipset (for netbooks).

Intel has over 80 design wins to-date for the new Atom platform from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, MSI, Toshiba, Samsung and Fujitsu, McCloskey said.

The new chips allow integration of graphics into the CPU, thereby enabling improved performance and smaller form factor.

Since introduction, Intel has shipped over 40 million Atom chips for netbooks to every major OEM globally.
