The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will undertake a detailed feasibility study for a high-speed railway system on the Mumbai –Ahmedabad route.

The project is expected to cost Rs 63,000 crore. The train is expected to run at speeds of around 300-350 km/hour.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between India and Japan, the study would be jointly funded by both countries. Earlier, a pre-feasibility study was done by RITES.

The MoU was signed between Katsuo Matsumoto, director, South Asia division of JICA, and Girish Pillai, advisor (infrastructure), Ministry of Railways, on Monday.

The study will be completed within eighteen months from its commencement.

The key study areas would be traffic forecasting, alignment surveys and comparative study of high speed railway technology and system.

A joint monitoring committee will also be set up comprising the railways ministry, the Planning Commission, the  finance ministry and the external affairs ministry from India with their Japanese counterparts.
