The Kolkata Dock System (KDS) under the Kolkata Port Trust(KoPT) set an all time record in container handling since its inception in 1977 in July this year at 34,287 twenty-equivalent-units (TEUs). This surpassed its previous record of 33,219 TEUs handled in June 2009. During the first three months of this fiscal, KDS handled an all time high container traffic of 1,24,886 TEUs against 1,02,723 TEUs in April-July 2008, a growth of 21.57 per cent over the corresponding period last year.
In 2008-09, KDS had handled 3,02,169 TEUs. KoPT said in a release, “This notable improvement of containerisation at KDS has beenpossible due to the multi-dimensional measures taken recently for improving the operational efficiency of the Container Terminal of Kolkata Dock System”.
