Maruti Suzuki India, India’s largest car maker, on Tuesday said it would be recalling 33,098 vehicles, including its popular models Alto 800 and Alto K10.

According to the company’s statement to the stock exchanges, the recall is to inspect and replace the ‘right hand door latch assembly’. Maruti Suzuki dealers in the domestic market will contact customers who have cars manufactured between December 8, 2014 and February 18, 2015, it stated.

The problem was noticed on the basis of internal quality checks undertaken by the company. Accordingly, proactive action has been initiated in the interest of customers, according to the company’s statement.

It also noted that the company has decided to go for the recall keeping in mind the customer safety. According to its statement, 19,780 units of Alto 800 and 13,318 units of Alto K10 will be replaced by Maruti. In December last year, Maruti Suzuki had recalled 3,800 units of its Ciaz cars to check a suspected fault in the vehicle’s clutch operation system. In September, Maruti Suzuki had recalled 69,555 units of the DZire, Swift and Ritz in September, to repair a wiring harness fitment.

Last month, the revised draft note of Central Road Transport and Safety Bill indicated that it would impose a fine of Rs 100,000 a vehicle if its maker does not recall a defective one. The Bill was initiated after General Motors recalled 114,000 Taveras in 2013, where it had allegedly fudged emission data.
