State-owned power producer NTPC today said it got Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) clearance for its 2,400-Mw (3x800 MW), Stage-I Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project being set up in Bijapur district of adjoining Karnataka.
The board of directors recently cleared the investment proposal of Rs 15,166 crore for setting up the project, NTPC said in a statement here.
The company said it would soon start work at the plant site. NTPC has sourced the 800 Mw units through a bulk tendering process, it said.
Kudgi is the first plant to be set up in Karnataka by NTPC and will have a total installed capacity of 4,000 MW over two phases. The first phase envisages the establishment of 2,400 MW of generation capacity at the plant.
"The project will have super-critical boilers and the latest technology. The coal requirement will be met from NTPC's own mine at Pakhri Barwadi, in Jharkhand," the statement said.
Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board recently handed over 1,923 acres of land required for the main plant. Land acquisition for the remaining 1,600 acres is in progress.
To meet the water requirement, the Karnataka government has sanctioned 5.2 TMC of water per annum from the Almatti Dam, which is 18 km from the plant site, it said.
The power generated from this project would be supplied to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
