India’s leading power generator, the state owned NTPC Limited registered a 10% growth in power generation in the first quarter of FY 2016-17.

The cumulative generation of the company was 64.6 billion units (BUs) in Q1FY17 as compared to 58.70 BUs during same period last year,” NTPC said ia a media statement.

NTPC group achieved generation increase of 11.65% during the period.

The electricity tariff billed by NTPC to the beneficiaries has also been reduced significantly as compared to the same period last year despite increase in fuel prices, said the company.

NTPC has a total installed capacity of 47178 MW through its 18 coal based, 7 gas based, 9 solar PV, one Hydro and 8 Subsidiaries / Joint Venture power stations.  Company has a capacity of over 24,000 MW under different phases construction presently.

In an interview with Business Standard last week, Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC said they are envisaging a growth of 6-7% in power demand in coming years and the company would continue to add capacity accordingly.

“As of now, we are implementing 24000 mw which in itself is a huge capacity. The decision to add this capacity was taken on the basis of projections which were made earlier. Besides, we plan to place order for 2000-2500 mw every year, so that we have consistent capacity addition," Singh had told the paper.

NTPC in a statement also said the company s adhering to all the principles underlined in the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojn (UDAY) reforms plans.

“As a result of rationalization of coal linkages, reduction in imported coal consumption, enforcement of third party sampling of coal and other measures have led to reduction in energy charges of coal stations benefitting the Discoms and the consumers,” said the statement.

In spite of the increase in Clean Energy Cess on coal, a saving of Rs 446 crore has been made in monthly billing of equivalent quantity of energy supplied in April 2016 as compared to that of last year, said Singh in the interview last week.
