Heads of half-a-dozen public sector undertakings and a few private companies are set to converge on the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) here on Friday to discuss the issues connected with corporate social responsibility.

The two-day national conference would be attended by Bhaskar Chatterjee, secretary, Department of Public Enterprises; Rana Som, CMD, NMDC Ltd; Maj Gen Ravi Khetrapal, CMD, Bharat Dynamics Ltd; M Narayana Rao, CMD, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd; and Joy Varghese, director, Nalco.

Among the private sector participants are the representatives from Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Ramky Foundation.

RK Mishra, director, IPE, told the media here today that the conference would focus on perspectives on CSR from companies operating in different sectors, best practices and accountability issues, among others. On the second day, it would have a special lecture on the future outlook for CSR by AK Rath, dean (School of Public Policy and Governance), Management Development Institute, Gurgaon.

According to Punam Singh, conference convener, CSR is based on the idea that companies like citizens are members of the community, and have rights as well as duties towards it. Citing reports, she said the government was considering a proposal to make a CSR spend of 2 per cent of net profits mandatory.

The conference is being jointly organised by the ONGC Subir Raha Chair on Corporate Governance at IPE and the Global Leadership Forum, Kolkata.
