REC to provide Rs 20,000 cr for Telangana power projects

The state would get 2,800 Mw of additional power by the end of next year from three sources

The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) would provide funds to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore for power projects of Telangana generation and transmission corporations and distribution companies.

REC chairman and managing director, Rajeev Sharma, gave this assurance when he called on state chief minister, K Chandrasekhara Rao, here on Tuesday.

Responding to a suggestion made by the chief minister, according to an official press release, Sharma had also agreed to fund all the projects to be executed by the state's generation corporation (Genco).

During the meeting, which was also attended by Genco chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao, the chief minister emphasised the need for augmenting the available power generation capacity of less than 5,000 Mw in the state through long-term, short-term and medium- term strategies.

The Genco chief was stated have informed Rao that the state would get 2,800 Mw of additional power by the end of next year from three sources -- 600 Mw from Genco's Bhupalpally power project in Warangal, 1,200 Mw from the state-owned Singareni Collieries Jaipur power plant in Adilabad and 1,000 Mw from central power stations.
