SpiceJet seeks DGFT permission for importing ATF

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet today said it has applied for permission from the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for import of aviation turbine fuel.

SpiceJet is the first airline in the country to apply for approval for import of ATF, an airline spokesperson said.

"We hope that direct import of aviation fuel will bring considerably bring down our operational cost. After discussing the proposal in detail, we decided to go ahead with importing of aviation fuel from overseas market. We have applied before the DGFT for permission to import the aviation fuel in India," said Neil Mills, SpiceJet CEO.

SpiceJet is not just talking about opportunities but actively pursuing them, he added.

The government has allowed direct import of ATF by Indian carriers for their own use.

The airline industry is passing through financial crisis. The high operating cost of the sector is largely attributable to the cost of aviation turbine fuel.
