Banks in Karnataka have achieved 80-95 per cent success in opening accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) by November-end. Of this, three districts — Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Chikkamagalur — have achieved 95 per cent of the target.

Of 30 districts in the state, 24 districts have achieved an 80-95 per cent of their targets. However, the remaining three districts — Mandya, Koppal and Chamarajanagar — are below 80 per cent, which are required to put in extra efforts to improve their performance and complete the task within the timeline, said T K Srivastava, executive director, Syndicate Bank.

Addressing the 129th State Level Bankers’ Committee meeting, here today, he said the SLBC has established a Grievance Redressal Mechanism by way of a Toll Free Number to address the queries and complaints from the general public and resolution of their problems.

PMJDY was launched on August 28, 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The programme aims to provide banking services to people in the rural and urban areas, particularly from the vulnerable groups such as the weaker sections and low income groups. The government has set the target that every uncovered household be provided with bank accounts before January 26, 2015.

Srivastava said, banks have completed household survey across 10,717 wards as against allotted 12,217 wards, thus covering 88 per cent of the survey work as on November 22, 2014. Out of 9.54 million households for which survey has been completed, banks have covered 7.79 million households by opening minimum one account and achieved 82 per cent progress.
