The Bar Council of India has been swift to follow up on Chief Justice T S Thakur’s emotional speech on Sunday addressed to the Prime Minister and Ministers of states regarding the critical situation of judicial backlogs in India.

The Chairman of the Bar Council, Manan Kumar Mishra, issued a letter today to state bar councils and bar associations in all states appealing to the legal fraternity to extend co-operation to judges in disposal of cases in their concerned courts.

The letter requests lawyers to work over the vacation in the interest of poor litigants of the nation. It also highlights the necessity of making immediate judicial appointments across the various high courts and the Supreme Court to cope with the heavy backlog of cases and implores the union and state governments to fill up vacancies at the earliest.

Mishra went on to extend the full support of the bar to the Chief Justice and appreciated the quick response of the Prime Minister in his assurance to find a solution to the problem.

The Chairman has decided to convene a joint meeting of state bar councils and bar associations likely to be held on May 7/8 to deliberate further on the issue.
