Cyclone Burevi weakens into depression, likely to remain over Gulf of Mannar for 12 hours: IMD

The deep depression weakened into a depression over the Gulf of Mannar and is likely to remain practically stationary over the same region and weaken into a well-marked, low-pressure area during the next 12 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said while referring to cyclone Burevi on Friday. "The Deep Depression over Gulf of Mannar close to Ramanathapuram District coast remained practically stationary during past 18 hours, weakened into a depression and lay centered at 5:30 pm today over Gulf of Mannar close to Ramanathapuram District coast, about 40 km southwest of Ramanathapuram, 70 km west-southwest of Pamban. The associated wind speed is about 45-55 gusting to 65 kmph," IMD stated.

It further said the depression is likely to remain practically stationary over the same region and weaken into a well-marked, low-pressure area during next 12 hours. IMD also warned of heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 24 hours, over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe on December 4-5 and over Lakshadweep on December 5," IMD said.

IMD withdraws red alert for seven Kerala districts as cyclone Burevi weakens

In a relief to Kerala, the Met department has withdrawn the red alert issued for cyclone Burevi and rains in the seven southernmost districts of the state as thedeep depression was likely to weaken further into a depression. The India MeteorologicalDepartment (IMD) had in a late night bulletin issued on Thursday withdrawn the red alert and issued a yellow alert for 10 districts of the state.

 

In a bulletin released on Friday morning, the IMD said the deep depression is likely to move slowly west- southwestwards and cross Ramanathapuram and adjoining Thoothukudi districts in Tamil Nadu during the next six hours with wind speed of 50-60 gusting to 70 kmph.

 

"It is very likely to weaken further into a depression (wind speed 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph) during next 12 hours," IMD said.

 

It has issued yellow alerts for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has rescheduled nine flights scheduled for Friday.

Trivandrum International Airport resumes operations after cyclone Burevi weakens

Operations at Trivandrum International Airport resumed from 4 pm on Friday following the latest weather forecast on cyclone Burevi.

 

"Taking into consideration the Meteorological Report of weakening of cyclone Burevi into a deep depression and further into a well-marked, low-pressure area, Airport airfield has been opened for normal flight operations from 1600hrs IST on 4.12.20," Trivandrum Airport tweeted.

 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, "The Deep Depression over Gulf of Mannar close to Ramanathapuram district coast remained practically stationary during the past six hours. It is likely to remain stationary over the same region and weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours."

 

"Thereafter it will slowly move west-southwestwards across Ramanathapuram towards south Kerala and weaken into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area during subsequent 24 hours," IMD added.

 

The airport had earlier suspended all operations from 10 am to 6 pm in the wake of the cyclone. A yellow alert was issued in 10 districts across Kerala including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. The IMD issued a number three hazard warning sign at the Pamban port due to strong winds blowing at a speed of 55 kmph over the coast.

Cyclone Burevi: Kerala CM hold high-level meeting with representatives of armed forces, NDRF, others

In the wake of a high alert issued for Cyclone Burevi, a high-level meeting was held with representatives of armed forces, Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), various department heads, DGP and Chief Secretary, said Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday.

 

In the meeting, the situation was assessed and strategy was evaluated, Kerala Chief Minister informed.

 

"As IMD alerted the state, Kerala took all necessary precautions including a complete ban on fishing. District Collectors are making all preventive efforts. 2891 relief camps opened. A 24-hour control room with helpline numbers have been started," said Vijayan.
