Premature ovarian failure (POF), also known as premature menopause, where the ovaries stop functioning normally prior to the age of 40, is becoming a cause of concern for a number of women.

Changes in lifestyle is a contributing factor - this can happen due to smoking, drinking and poor nutrition. It can also occur due to thyroid problems, auto immune diseases and exposure to radiations such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Symptoms associated with menopause include night sweats, irritability, mood swings, irregular periods, loss of libido, aching joints and weight gain. If these symptoms are seen before the age of 40, then it is certainly a case of premature ovarian failure or early menopause.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, consult a fertility centre and go for a blood test. If your follicle stimulating hormone level is more than 25mIU/L, then you might have POF. Experts suggest a family history of POF increases the risk of developing the disorder.

Today's rapidly changing lifestyles mean that a woman's body undergoes several changes, which is why we are seeing cases of premature ovarian failures in young adults. It is always better to start a family on time, and in case of any medical issue, you should consult your doctor immediately.

There are solutions to this problem though - in vitro fertilisation or IVF, for example. If the ovaries fail, then consult a gynaecologist or go for hormone replacement therapy where hormones like estrogen and progesterone are replaced.

QUICK TIPS

Eat soy: Soy contains phytoestrogens. The best sources are tofu, soy powder soymilk and soy nuts.

Regular exercise: An active lifestyle can lower the risk of premature menopause. Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times a week is very important.

A good multivitamin supplement: Make sure your body receives an ample supply of Vitamin D, E, zinc and magnesium.
