India continues to be among countries with the lowest average connection speeds in Asia Pacific region, said a new report by Akamai Technologies on Thursday.

The report titled 'State of the Internet Report' for Q1, 2016, looked at internet speeds in 15 countries, including China, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, among others. Of these, while 13 had average connection speeds above the 4 Mbps broadband threshold, seven of them exceeded 10 Mbps speed with Singapore pushing the peak speed to 146.9 mbps.

India, along with Philippines, had the lowest average connection speeds among surveyed countries in the region, both at 3.5 Mbps, the report noted.

All 15 surveyed countries in the Asia-Pacific region showed a year-over-year growth in observed average connection speeds in the first quarter, the report noted. Indonesia, with a 110% gain, was again the only country to see its average connection speed more than double compared with the year prior

Global average connection speed rose to 6.3 Mbps, a 23% increase year-over-year. Meanwhile, global average peak connection speed increased 6.8% to 34.7 Mbps in the first quarter, rising 14% year-over-year.

David Belson, editor of the State of the Internet Report, said: "Global connection speeds have more than doubled since the summer of 2012, which can help support higher quality video streaming for bigger audiences across even more connected devices and platforms.”
