Indus water dispute: Pakistan reminds India of treaty obligations

Pakistan has reminded India of its obligations under the Indus Water Treaty and cautioned that New Delhi's own credibility would suffer if the accord was violated, a Pakistani official said.

Foreign office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said at the weekly media briefing: "India has to abide by its international obligations, if it wants to be taken seriously by the international community."

He was commenting on Thursday evening about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks that the water "rightfully belongs to India" under the water sharing accord and that it could not be allowed to go to Pakistan.

Zakaria said the treaty was a binding agreement under the Vienna Convention.

India has been, since the escalation of tensions after the Uri militant attack, indicating its intention to revisit the accord.
