India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage crosses 102.8 crore, says govt

India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 102.8 crore with more than 58 lakh vaccine doses administered on Monday, the Union Health Ministry said. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late in the night, it added. In the 18-44 age group, 40,92,47,732 first doses and 12,86,74,750 second doses have been administered since the start of phase three of the vaccination drive, according to health ministry data.

 

The ministry further said that cumulatively 71,88,31,679 first doses and 30,98,37,374 second doses of Covid vaccine have been administered so far.

 

India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 102.8 Crore (1,02,86,69,053) on Monday. More than 58 lakh (58,87,981) vaccine doses have been administered till 7 pm on Monday, it said. The vaccination exercise as a tool to protect the most vulnerable population groups in the country from COVID-19 continues to be regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest level, the ministry underlined.

Active Covid cases drop below 13K in TN; 1,112 new infections, 14 deaths

Tamil Nadu added 1,112 new Covid-19 infections on Monday, pushing the caseload to 26,96,328, while the death toll rose to 36,033 with 14 more fatalities, the health department said.

 

Recoveries outnumbered new infections with 1,341 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 26,47,504 leaving 12,791 active infections, a bulletin said.

 

Tamil Nadu, over the last few weeks, has been witnessing a declining trend in the daily fresh infections further leading to a drop in active cases. On October 21, active cases dropped below 14,000 while on October 17 it fell under 15,000.

 

Meanwhile, a total of 1,22,700 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined to 5,04,23,638. Chennai and Coimbatore accounted for the majority of new infections with 144 and 130 cases, respectively, while the remaining was scattered across other districts. As many as 11 districts reported new Covid-19 infections below 10, while Ariyalur recorded the least with one, the bulletin said.

Telangana logs 179 new COVID-19 cases, two deaths

Telangana on Monday recorded 179 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 6,70,453, while the death toll rose to 3,949 with two more fatalities.

 

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of fresh cases with 66, followed by Karimnagar (15) and Warangal Urban (11) districts, a state government bulletin said, providing details as of 5.30 PM today.

 

It said 104 people recovered from the infectious disease and the cumulative number of recoveries till date was 6,62,481. Active cases stood at 4,023.

 

It said 38,588 samples were tested on Monday and the total number tested till date was 2,73,47,333.

 

The samples tested per million population were 7,34,748.

 

The case fatality and recovery rates were at 0.59 per cent and 98.81 per cent compared to the national average of 1.3 per cent and 98.15 per cent, respectively.

Spike in Covid-19 cases in China caused by Delta variant: officials

China's national capital on Monday classified one area as medium-risk and a residential community as high risk for COVID-19 as total cases in the city rose to 21 while 33 cases were reported in different parts of the country, which officials attributed to virulent Delta variant.

A residential community in Changping district of Beijing was classified as a medium-risk area after reporting two locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of Beijing's centre for disease control and prevention, said on Monday.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri will inaugurate the "Chhath Vrati Special Vaccination Campaign" in Delhi on Tuesday.

The campaign, aimed at vaccinating people against COVID-19 infection ahead of the Chhath celebrations in Delhi, is set to run under the leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari.

Speaking to ANI, Tiwari said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said that the Chhath festival should be celebrated with all the security and precautions. So first of all, people should be vaccinated against COVID-19 infection. In this view, we (BJP) are going to run the "Chhath Vrati Special Vaccination Campaign" in association with Delhiites Foundation."

Mamata only vaccine against "Virus BJP": Abhishek Banerjee

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee Monday courted controversy by calling BJP a "virus" and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the "only vaccine" which will "eradicate" it in the next Lok Sabha poll in the country.

Court refuses to pass blanket order over Wankhede plea on witness 'extortion' affidavit

A special court here on Monday said it cannot pass a blanket order barring courts from taking cognizance of an affidavit of an independent witness in the drugs-on-cruise episode, in which he has levelled allegations of extortion attempt by NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede and others on actor Shah Rukh Khan, whose son Aryan is an accused in the case.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Wankhede had earlier in the day filed two separate affidavits before the special court against the allegations of extortion attempt levelled against them.

In the affidavits, the anti-drugs agency and Wankhede sought the court to pass an order saying no court should take cognizance of the affidavit prepared by the independent witness, Prabhakar Sail.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday hit out at National Conference president Farooq Abdullah for seeking talks with Pakistan, saying the government would rather talk to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir for making it the most developed in the country.

The home minister, who is on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir -- his first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 -- remotely inaugurated several development projects and laid the foundation stone of some.

Biological E hopes to roll out Covid-19 vaccine Corbevax by November-end

Biological E. Limited (BE) is expecting its COVID-19 vaccine Corbevax to be rolled out by the end of November even as the city-based firm is getting ready with 100 million doses for the launch, Mahima Datla, Managing Director, BE said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of signing a financing agreement with US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), she said currently the manufactured doses are being sent to Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh for regulatory testing.

"Cobevax is in phase 3 trials. We are likely to complete all the studies by end of November which is when we are expecting licence (from the drug regulator). The licence for children should follow one month later. The study in children is underway as well," she said.

Centre sends multidisciplinary team to Kanpur after Zika virus case reported

The Union Health Ministry has sent a high-level multidisciplinary team to Uttar Pradesh where a case of Zika virus disease has been reported.

A 57-year-old man from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh tested positive for Zika virus on October 22.

In a statement, the ministry said the multidisciplinary team comprising an entomologist, public health specialists and gynaecologist drawn from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, National Centre for Disease Control and RML Hospital, New Delhi has been deployed to assist the state health authorities for control and containment measures of Zika virus disease.
