Rainfall leads to waterlogging in parts of Gurugram

Severe waterlogging was witnessed in areas around Civil Hospital in Gurugram on Saturday evening following heavy rainfall.
 
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted "isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated thunderstorm and lightning" in Haryana and some other parts of north India on Saturday.
 
IMD also said on Saturday evening that there would be light to moderate intensity rain over parts of Haryana on Saturday evening.

New education policy will make India 'Vishva Guru': Nadda

The education policy drafted by the Modi government is in line with the soul of the country and will again make India a "Vishva Guru", BJP president J P Nadda said on Saturday.

To mark Teachers' Day, Nadda through video conferencing interacted with teachers from his school and university and asked them about their wellbeing, the BJP said in a statement.

RBI revises audit norms for banks to improve risk management

The Reserve Bank on Saturday came up with revised long format audit report (LFAR) norms with a view to improving efficacy of internal audit and risk management systems.
 
The LFAR, which applies to statutory central auditors (SCA) and branch auditors of banks, has been updated keeping in view the large scale changes in the size, complexities, business model and risks in the banking operations, the RBI said. The revised LFAR format will be put into operation for the period covering 2020-21 and onwards, the central bank said.

AI-related job searches rising steadily: Indeed

Job searches related to artificial intelligence (AI) have risen 106 per cent during June 2019 to June 2020 period, with accelerated adoption of AI-led technologies over the recent years in the country, according to a report by global job site Indeed. This compares with the data of June 2018 to June 2019 from Indeed.
 
Job searches related to AI saw 20 per cent rise during March- July 2020 period amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the report added.
 
In the wake of the pandemic, industries across the board are witnessing an accelerated adoption of AI-led technologies in order to ensure business continuity during the changed circumstances, the report said.

Adhocism in appointment of teachers and lecturers affects students: SC

Supreme Court has said the mess of adhocism is prevalent in the appointment of teachers and lecturers having consequences for the students, who need to benefit from the best education process.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K M Joseph using Article 142 of the Constitution passed a slew of directions to streamline the recruitment process of lecturers and teachers in Uttar Pradesh.

Major ports asked to use only tug boats made in India

The Ministry of Shipping has directed all major ports in the country to procure or charter tug boats which are only made in India. 
 
All procurements being done by the ports would now need to be carried out as per the revised Make in India order. 
 
The Ministry is aiming to promote the Indian ship-building industry and also have discussion with some leading countries for Make in India ship-building, according to a press release here on Saturday.

Maharashtra govt wants 50% oxygen production reserved for medical use

The Maharashtra government has proposed to the Centre that 50 per cent of the oxygen production in the state be reserved for medical use in view of the coronavirus pandemic, health minister Rajesh Tope said.
 
He was speaking to reporters here after attending a review meeting held by Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday.
 
Currently, 15 per cent of the oxygen production is reserved for medical use while the rest can be used for industrial needs, Tope said. Due to the need of oxygen for Covid-19 patients, there is a shortage, he said.

Typhoon Haishen approaches Japan packing powerful winds

A powerful typhoon, the second in a week, was barreling toward the Okinawa islands in southern Japan on Saturday, prompting warnings about torrential rainfall and fierce wind gusts.
 
Weather officials have cautioned about Typhoon Haishen for the last several days, urging people to brace for what could be a record storm and be ready to take shelter and stock up on food and water.
 
The Japan Meteorological Agency said Haishen, packing sustained winds of up to 180 kilometers (112 miles) per hour early Saturday, was on course to hit Okinawa by Sunday, and later the main southern island of Kyushu.

Make Sharad Pawar chief after merging NCP with Congress: Athawale

Observing that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are not keen on donning the mantle of Congress president, Union minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday suggested the NCP be merged with the grand old party and Sharad Pawar be made new chief of the merged entity.
 
The Republican Party of India (A) president also said that such decision should be taken jointly by the Congress and Pawar.
 
"Currently, Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are not keen on becoming the Congress president. It is my instruction to Congress of getting NCP merged and making Sharad Pawar party president. The decision should be jointly taken by Pawar and the Congress," Athawale tweeted.

Covid-hit IIT Kharagpur imposes measures to check spread of infection

IIT Kharagpur authorities have directed its employees staying in the campus not to venture out, unless it is an emergency, between September 6 and 13 following detection of several Covid-19 cases in the institute.
 
However, faculty members will continue to conduct classes online from home, the institute said in a notification.
 
About 20 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the campus since August 19, an official said on Saturday.
 
In the notification, the institute issued a list of dos and don''ts which also include a ban on entry of outsiders, except those attached to essential services, during the period when all offices inside the campus will remain closed.

Quota for Vaishno Devi pilgrims from outside J&K raised to 500 daily: Official

Nearly three weeks after the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district was reopened for pilgrimage, the shrine board has increased the quota for pilgrims from outside the Union Territory to 500 daily, officials said on Saturday.
 
The shrine atop the Trikuta hills was reopened on August 16 after a gap of nearly five months due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. A cap of 2,000 pilgrims daily, including 100 from outside Jammu and Kashmir, was imposed initially.
 
"The pilgrimage to the cave shrine is proceeding smoothly and picking up pace with each passing day. Keeping this in view, the quota of pilgrims from outside Jammu and Kashmir has been enhanced to 500 per day, out of a ceiling of 2,000 daily, till further orders," said Ramesh Kumar, the Chief Executive Officer of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
