February 23 was the last date for filing of nominations and with this the first process in the calendar of events has been completed. The second process of scrutiny will take place tomorrow (Monday).
The number of seats in five taluks and Mysore city is 204. Nominations have been received from all the wards.
Figures show that independents have filed the highest number of nominations with 499, followed by Janata Dal (S) 361, Congress 330, BJP 236, Social Democratic Party 36, CPM 6 and Janata Dal (U) 4. Entering the fray for the first time, B S Yeddyurappa’s KJP has filed 159 candidates, indicating that it is not contesting all the 204 seats.
For the 65 seats in Mysore City Corporation, as many as 678 nominations have been filed, the highest being independents 228, followed by Janata Dal (S) 108, Congress 104, BJP 102, KJP 66, BSR 47, Social Democratic Party 18, JD(U) 4, and CPM 1.
The number of nominations filed for the four town municipal councils in the district with their number of seats is Nanjangud 177 (27), Bannur 104 (23), Hunsur 329 (27), and K R Nagar 194 (23).
For the three town panchayats, nominations received and their number of seats are: T Narasipur 87 (11), Periyapatna 66 (15), and H D Kote 107 (13).
Some of the political parties could not finalise the names of the candidates till yesterday in view of short time available for them.
This has resulted in candidates aspiring for party tickets also filing nominations.
A clear picture of the number of candidates left in fray will emerge after the last date for withdrawal on February 27. Elections are scheduled on March 7.
