LPG cylinders: 37 prosecuted for malpractice

Delhi government conducted drive against sale of underweight LPG cylinders by gas agencies

Delhi government today started a drive against sale of underweight LPG cooking cylinders by gas agencies and prosecuted 37 of them for the malpractice.

The Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs conducted the drive in the city against the sale of underweight LPG cylinders by the gas agencies.

The drive was taken up in all the nine districts by the teams under the zonal Legal Metrology Officers of the department.

The teams inspected 94 gas agencies across the city during the surprise raids and 37 irregularities were detected and the owners were prosecuted under section 30 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 which provides for the penalty of upto Rs 10,000, said an official.

For the second or subsequent offence, the punishment ranges from imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

The maximum number of 11 cases was reported from South West district, while five cases each was reported from West, North West, New Delhi and Central districts. Four cases each were reported from South, East and North East districts. Besides that three cases came into light from North district.

The raids were conducted on the basis of complaints received regarding sale of such domestic cylinders from the consumers.

The weight of the gas in a domestic LPG cylinder should be 14.2 Kg in addition to the weight of the cylinder.

The drive will continue in coming days, the official said.
