Activist Medha Patkar ended her 10-day fast today after receiving assurance that all ongoing slum demolitions will be stopped till an inquiry into the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) was completed.
Urban Housing Minister Ajay Maken said he saluted her for taking up a fight against SRA.
According to the SRA Act, consent of 70 per cent of residents of a slum is required before their houses can be upgraded or redeveloped by a private builder.
Only 52 per cent of households gave their consent for redevelopment even as the builder began evictions to begin its work from April 2.
