Eminent medical researcher and teacher Ranjit Roy Chaudhury passed away today morning in Chennai. He was here to deliver speech in a conference on Pharmacovigilance, organised at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai.

He was the chairman of the National Committee for formulating the policy and guidelines in drugs and clinical trials in India, set up by the Government of India. The committee recommemdations has been accepted by the government for implementation, according to earlier reports.

He, along with his team, developed the "Delhi Model" of Rational Use of Medicines and took steps to provide almost 90 per cent of medicines prescribed by the government hospitals, free to the patients. The model was later replicated in various other countries. He is the founder of Delhi Society for the Promotion of Rational Use of Medicines.

He also had active role in the Task Force preparing the "Antibiotic Policy" of the Government of India.

He was the Founder President of Delhi Medical Council, and was in the expert committee of Indian Council of Medical Research. He also worked in various positions with World Health Organisation for several years, according to reports.
