PWD starts work to re-lay Delhi BRT road stretch

Public Works Department (PWD) has started the process to re-lay the 5.8 km-long road stretch of Bus Rapit Transit (BRT) corridor, which was dismantled on the directions of the AAP government.

According to the department, the work of re-laying the road will be completed by the end of this year which will ensure a smooth ride for motorists in the stretch.

In January this year, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had started the process of dismantling the controversial BRT corridor, a Rs 180-crore traffic project built in 2008.

The dismantling of the corridor cost the government around Rs 3.15 crore.

"PWD has started work to re-lay the entire road stretch which was causing inconvenience for motorists at some points due to dismantling of the corridor.

"The re-laying work of the road will be completed before the end of this year," said a senior government official.

The 5.8-km corridor between Moolchand and Ambedkar Nagar came up in 2008 and PWD "which started the dismantling work in January" was to have completed it by March end and then re-lay the road, but it missed the deadline.

The Kejriwal government had in July last year decided to scrap the corridor after it concurred with the general view that it was not serving the purpose it was constructed for and was, instead, leading to massive traffic jams.
