The South India Transport Council (SITCO) has demanded proper regulation of web-based taxi services, in view of the rape of a 27-year-old girl by a driver of Uber cab service in Delhi. "In the recent past, there was confusion regarding the regulation of web-based or app-based taxi operators. I would urge the Central government to frame guidelines for regulations, so that there is a uniformity in the country," Karnataka's Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said during the ongoing SITCO meeting in Goa last evening. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was present at the inaugural event.

However, in his speech he did not comment on the web-based taxi services.

"The web-based taxi service is creating havoc. They should be brought under control. They should be regulated," SITCO secretary R Srilekha said while introducing the agenda of the two-day meeting.

"Web-based taxi operators should be brought under Motor Vehicle Act," she said.

The rape of the girl by a driver of Uber taxi service in Delhi last year had raised concerns about the web-based cabs.

Following the incident, many of the states had disallowed these taxi services.
