A woman and a 'granthi' (Sikh priest) were arrested in Punjab on Monday on charges of desecration of the holy Guru Granth Sahib, police said on Monday.
Amritsar's Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jasdeep Singh Saini told media that those arrested included granthi Jagdeep Singh of Amritsar district and Balwinder Kaur of Ludhiana.
Saini said that the priest had admitted that he desecrated the holy book.
The woman, Balwinder Kaur, has been accused of tearing pages of the holy book at the gurdwara in Ghawaddi village in Ludhiana district.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner P.S. Umaranangal said that the reason for the desecration was being ascertained.
Punjab has witnessed violent protests in the past few days following incidents of sacrilege of the holy book.
