Aruna Roy attacks cash transfers

National Advisory Council (NAC) member Aruna Roy on Friday attacked the cash transfer scheme, stating that the scheme could not be ‘a substitute for development’. “Technological fixes in the form of ‘Aadhar’ cannot become a substitute for development. While the government is moving fast to end subsidies, there is no legislative sanction for a programme like Aadhar. It (Aadhar) is being promoted though the parliamentary standing committee has raised a series of fundamental objections,” Roy wrote in a letter to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
