In a step towards decontrol of the sugar industry, the Union government has notified the lifting of quantitative ceilings on sugar exports.

The commerce ministry in a notification yesterday removed export restrictions including the requirement for exporters to register with APEDA (Agricultural Products Export Development Agency).

Henceforth, exporters will no longer have to register with APEDA for the issue of registration-cum-allocation certificates prior to undertaking export of the commodity.

The notification follows a recent Cabinet decision to remove export restrictions on sugar as part of its plan to decontrol the industry.
