The government has approved the commencement of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) as a 100 per cent centrally-sponsored scheme, in a bid to boost rural road connectivity.
The government has also cleared the upgradation of existing roads which do not cover the minimum required specifications of all-weather roads at a cost of Rs 24,000 crore.
The scheme, which will not require the approval of the full Planning Commission, was okayed by the Union Cabinet last night, parliamentary affairs minister Pramod Mahajan said here today.

Under the programme, which was launched in December last year, 1.40 lakh habitations would be connected by all-weather roads at a cost of around Rs 34,200 crore by the year 2007, Mahajan said.
