Chief minister Dharam Singh has reiterated that the state government is committed to implement the recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee on correcting the regional imbalance.

Speaking to reporters at Hubli airport on Monday, he said the state government had sought the help of Central government, as the former was not in a position to spare Rs 9,600 crore recommended by the Committee. The Centre has agreed to the proposal of sharing 50 per cent of the burden, he added.

Singh said the government has already initiated steps to implement the recommendations. Establishment of Veterinary University at Bidar, Women's varsity at Bijapur, Drip Irrigation Corporation at Hubli are steps in this direction.

Replying to a query on the finance department rejecting the Rs 176 crore Malaprabha third stage project, Singh said he would get the proposal cleared soon. He said the government was not discriminating north Karnataka.

KPCC president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Congress would fight the ensuing elections to Taluk Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats on its own.

The party was strong enough and there was no need for any alliance, Kharge asserted.

Kharge who was here to participate in the District level Congress convention said that the conventions were being organised to strengthen the party further.
