A devastating fire gutted most of the shops in Kolkata's Hatibagan Market, one of the oldest in the northern part of the city, early on Thursday.
The fire was brought under control at around 11.00 AM, fire brigade sources said, adding that firemen were still working to ensure that it did not spark again from any ember.
There was no report of any injury.
Altogether 32 fire engines were pressed into service to bring the blaze under control. Later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot and said that an investigation would be conducted to ascertain whether it was an accidental fire or a case of mischief.
