Four of Maharashtra's premier universities would soon be bifurcated to set up four new universities.
Institutions like the Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Amravati universities have over 1,800 colleges and institutions affiliated to them because of which, there is a lot of burden on them which has prompted the government of Maharashtra take this step.
The move is considered to be crucial as the University Grants Commission(UGC) has expressed its interest in decentralisation of universities in India. A number of committees have submitted reports to the government and directorate of higher and technical education, based on which, the goverment has decided to bi-furcate these four universities.
Minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope informed this in Pune. A commmittee appointed to prepare a feasibility report is expected to submit the report to the government soon, which would then be forwarded to the UGC for approval, Tope said.
As of now, more than 555 colleges and institutions in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts are affilicated to university of Pune. University of Mumbai and University of Nagpur also have more than 500 affiliated colleges each under their belt.
