The Centre today sought to downplay the growing momentum for carving out of small states in some regions after the decision on Telangana and said cooperation of (undivided) states and political parties is needed in addressing such demands.
"None of the demands are new," Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said when asked if the Centre is concerned over fresh pitch being made for creation of new states. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is firm on its demand for creation of Gorkhaland and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has backed trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh.
"These demands have been there since a very long time. So, it's a matter.....Because you need to have cooperation from the states and all the political parties. There are lot of processes involved," Moily said.
On criticism in some quarters over the Civilian Nuclear Liability Bill in the context of it capping compensation at $450 million in the event of an accident, he said it's always that for any view, there is a counter view. He, however, added, "If that counter view merits any real consideration, it's a matter that we can reflect on".
Former Attorney General Soli Sarbjee had described as a violation of human rights the proposed attempt to cap the level of compensation victims of a nuclear accident will be entitled to. Asked if the Bill would be tabled in the current session of Parliament, he said, "It may or may not come".
