Uttaranchal Chief Minister N D Tiwari urged forest researchers to formulate a model that would augment economic growth in harmony with ecological conservation in the state on Monday.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) coinciding with the World Environment Day, Tiwari also asked researchers to critically analyse the advantages of planting pine trees so that common people were benefitted in the long run.

"Pine trees occupy large areas in Uttaranchal. A book on pine trees is due to be released in the state. Scientists here should critically analyse both the benefits and the disadvantages of pine trees," Tiwari said.

The chief minister also asked scientists to dedicate themselves to meet environmental challenges facing the world in general and India in particular.

The Sudanese agriculture and forest minister, who was also present at the occasion, called for increased co-operation between Sudan and India to boost ties between the two countries.
