Govt reacts cautiously to US Congress committee's nod to draft N-deal legislation.

India today ruled out capping its strategic programme or diluting its stand on Iran but feels the "first and most important hurdle" in the implementation of the nuclear deal with Washington has been removed with last night's crucial voting in a committee of the US Congress.

Notwithstanding the bipartisan support a draft US legislation providing India-specific waivers received in the House International Relations Committee, officials were cautiously optimistic about the deal crossing the last lap by August when the US Congress was expected to clear it.

"I won't say we are already there. There is still work required to be done. This (House Committee vote last night) was the first and the most important hurdle," an official said apparently trying to underplay the significant progress made last night.

The draft legislation seeks India's "full and active" participation in curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions and halt increase of atomic arms arsenals in South Asia.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) today expressed 'serious reservation and apprehension' about the draft legislation on nuclear deal.

Citing media reports about the draft Bill, CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said it was clear that the US was trying to exert pressure on India to change its foreign policy.
