The clamping of curfew in certain areas of Ludhiana, one of the prominent industrial belts in Punjab, has affected the functioning of industries in the city.
It was reported that curfew had been clamped in the city today after an unruly mob of protesting migrant labourers turned violent and started ransacking public property.
The labourers have been protesting against the police inaction to protect them from incidents of crime, especially robbery .
The clamping of curfew saw many industries forced to shut their operations.
Taking a strong note of developments, industrialists in the city demanded the government take the matter of protecting the rights of labourers seriously.
The industrialists maintained they had been receiving complaints from their workers, especially migrant labourers, alleging frequent crimes like robbery.
Punjab Apparel Park Managing Director Sanjeev Gupta maintained that as industries in the region had been facing shotage of labourers, incidents like this would not augur well for the industry.
He maintained that the interest of migrant labourers needed to be taken care of and administration should ensure their security.
