This is the second time the university has been accredited with the top grade. Last time (2001) it was accredited with the five star status and under the new evaluation system it has now been accredited with A grade, the highest a varsity can get.
Karnatak University is also the first in the state to be evaluated under the new system. NAAC director V S Prasad in his letter to the vice chancellor of Karnatak University Srinivas Saidapur informed that the outcome of the re-accreditation exercise had been processed and approved by the executive committee.
The re-accreditation is for a period of five years with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.02 on a scale of four points at 'A' grade valid from February 4.
The grade has been awarded on the basis of the accomplishments of the university in teaching, research, infrastructure, extension activities and the overall performance.
Delighted over the recognition, Saidapur, VC said it was a result of efforts by the faculty and administration to maintain the desired high standards of education and development of global competence among the faculty and students.
This would help the varsity to secure funds and support from national and international funding agencies to improve teaching, research and infrastructure development.
A NAAC peer committee comprising of five experts under the chairmanship of former V-C of Madras University P Thyagarajan evaluated achievements and activities of the university in December 2007.
